Music at Rodmersham
At Rodmersham School, music is highly valued. All children enjoy, engage and achieve well in music lessons at our school. A Music Specialist delivers weekly curriculum music lessons to all year groups, and we have many opportunities across the year to share our musical talents with friends and family and the wider public. Beginning in Term 6 of EYFS, all children will follow the bespoke ‘Music Cake’ theory, which introduces them to all the elements of music.
This threads through each academic year so the children can build on their musical knowledge year after year to strengthen their understanding of how all the elements work together. This ensures continuity of understanding and aids the progression and retention of sticky knowledge. Each academic year includes a workshop term where the children can learn about samba music, African drums, or junk orchestra and then cement that knowledge with a practical workshop at the end of the term. Key Stage 2 attend the annual Young Voices concert at The O2 Arena in London.
We celebrate at Rodmersham with Harvest, Easter and Christmas services at church, Easter and Christmas Concerts, Nativity performances for Year R and one and a Year 6 Production and Leaver’s Assembly. Music provider ‘Pitch Perfect’ provides lessons for our children in drumming, guitar, piano and violin, should they choose to take lessons. We are an Arts Award Centre for Music, and all children were awarded their ‘Discover’ Arts Award for Music in 2021. We are also a Music Mark member school, which is only granted when a school can ensure (and prove!) that they are providing a broad and balanced music curriculum for all pupils.
Our Music Development Plan
The Music Development Plan for Rodmersham Primary School for the academic year 2024/25 outlines the school's approach to music education across three key areas:
Curriculum Music: The school offers a bespoke music curriculum taught by a specialist for 60 minutes per week, integrating resources from the Model Music Curriculum, the New National Plan for Music Education, and other music education programs. The curriculum includes a focused "Workshop Term" where students explore different musical experiences, such as African Drumming or Junk Orchestra. The school is recognised as a Music Mark School and an Arts Award Centre, with all students having achieved the 'Discover' Music Arts Award.
Music Tuition, Choirs, and Ensembles: Independent music lessons for piano, drums, and guitar are offered starting from Year 1. Students in Key Stage 2 can join the Young Voices choir, which performs annually at the O2 Arena. Musical Experiences: Various musical events are organised, such as Harvest Services, Christmas concerts, and Easter celebrations where children sing in groups. Year 6 students perform a leaver’s musical at the end of the school year. The whole school also attends musicals or pantomimes annually.
Future Plans: The school aims to introduce the Music Arts Award 'Explore' level for select pupils and increase participation in individual music lessons
