Phonics and Spelling at Rodmersham
Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. They are taught how to:
-
recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes;
-
identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make - such as /sh/ or /oo/; and
-
blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.
Children can then use this knowledge to ‘de-code’ new words that they hear or see. This is the first
important step in learning to read. Research shows that when phonics is taught in a structured way – starting with the easiest sounds and progressing through to the most complex – it is the most effective way of teaching young children to read. It is particularly helpful for children aged 5 to 7. Almost all children who receive good teaching of phonics will learn the skills they need to tackle new words. They ca then go on to read any kind of text fluently and confidently, and to read for enjoyment.
At Rodmersham we use Monster Phonics to support our phonics teaching.
Monster Phonics is an enhanced systematic synthetic phonics scheme. It teaches phonics in a comprehensive structured progression but provides additional multi-sensory support to make learning more memorable and engaging. It uses colour coding and monster sound cues to support learning when children encounter long vowels, silent letters, and tricky letters. This additional support is used consistently and then cleverly phased out, creating confident independent readers. And, it’s not just about the colours; the monsters themselves each represent a sound which brings phonics to life. This creates engagement, and speeds up the learning process for everyone.
DfE Phonics Screening
What is the Phonics Screening Check?
Children in Year 1 throughout the country will all take part in a phonics screening check during the same week in June. Children in Year 2 will also take the check if they did not achieve the required result in Year 1 or if they have not taken the test before.
How Are the Results Used?
Headteachers should decide whether it is appropriate for each pupil to take the phonics screening check. The phonics screening check is designed to confirm whether individual “ children have learnt phonic decoding and blending
skills to an appropriate standard.
What Happens During the Screening?
The test contains 40 words. Each child will sit one-on-one and read each word aloud to a teacher. The test will take approximately 10 minutes per child, although all children are different and will complete the check at their own pace. The list of words the children read consists of 20 real words and 20 pseudo words (nonsense words).
Pseudo Words (Nonsense Words)
The pseudo words will be shown to your child with a picture of an alien. This provides the children with a context for the pseudo word, independent of any existing vocabulary they may have. Pseudo words are included because they will be new to all pupils; they do not favour children with a good vocabulary knowledge or visual memory of words.
Reporting to Parents
All schools must report each child’s results to their parents by the end of the summer term. They will also confirm whether the child has met the standard threshold. Children who do not achieve the expected level will retake the test when they are in Year 2.
Superhero Spelling
Building on the successful implementation of the Monster Phonics program, we have further enhanced our approach to spelling and reading by introducing the Superhero Spelling program for Key Stage 2. This investment ensures continuity and progression, supporting our students as they develop essential literacy skills
Teachers have designed superhero Spelling for teachers. A cast of superheroes and powerful memory cues will help your children learn critical spelling rules and concepts. This is a complete solution to teaching KS2 spelling with comprehensive planning and resources to teach and practise all the statutory word lists easily.
A key aspect of our approach is flexibility. Each week consists of three core phases: Learn, Build, and Show. Schools can choose to complete the Learn and Build phases together or separately.
